Where is sperm made
Upon reaching puberty , a man will produce millions of sperm cells every day, each measuring about 0. There is a system of tiny tubes in the testicles. These tubes, called the seminiferous tubules, house the germ cells that hormones — including testosterone , the male sex hormone — cause to turn into sperm.
The germ cells divide and change until they resemble tadpoles with a head and short tail. The tails push the sperm into a tube behind the testes called the epididymis. For about five weeks, the sperm travel through the epididymis, completing their development. Once out of the epididymis, the sperm move to the vas deferens. When a man is stimulated for sexual activity, the sperm are mixed with seminal fluid — a whitish liquid produced by the seminal vesicles and the prostate gland — to form semen.
As a result of the stimulation, the semen, which contains up to million sperm , is pushed out of the penis ejaculated through the urethra. The process of going from a germ cell to a mature sperm cell capable of egg fertilization takes around 2. Sperm are produced in the testicles and develop to maturity while traveling from the seminiferous tubules through the epididymis into the vas deferens. Spermatogenesis is the complete cycle of sperm production and maturation.
Testosterone is responsible for normal male secondary sex characteristic development, libido or sex drive and normal erections. Testosterone is also important for sperm production, as levels of this hormone are 50 fold higher within the testis as in the blood.
Within the adult testicle, there is feet of tubing, termed seminiferous tubules, within which sperm is made. Sperm is made from precursor cells termed germ cells that give rise to approximately million sperm daily in a process termed spermatogenesis that takes approximately 64 days in humans. This is equivalent to making about sperm per heartbeat. Within the seminiferous tubule, germ cells are arranged in a highly ordered sequence from outside to inside. Lining the tubules, there are adult testis stem cells that begin the process of sperm production.
Overall there are 13 recognizable germ cell types in the human testis: dark type A spermatogonia Ad ; pale type A spermatogonia Ap ; type B spermatogonia B ; preleptotene R , leptotene L , zygotene z and pachytene primary spermatocytes p ; secondary spermatocytes II ; and Sa, Sb, Sc, Sd1, and Sd2 spermatids.
Despite the high volume production of sperm, quality control checkpoints exist throughout the sperm production process to ensure the biological and genetic integrity of ejaculated sperm. It has long been believed that sperm take 90 days 3 months to be made and ejaculated. Turek recently discovered and published that in fact this time frame is actually much shorter. Sperm develop in the testicles for days and are then excreted into the coiled ducts of the epididymis and complete their maturation for another 14 days.
Sperm waiting to be ejaculated remain in the epididymis, near the bottom of the scrotum. At ejaculation, sperm are propelled through the vas deferens within the spermatic cord and into the abdominal cavity and join the seminal vesicles, which add alkaline fluid that helps to support sperm.
The testes are linked to the rest of the male reproductive organs by the vas deferens, which extends over the base of the pelvic bone or ilium, and wraps around to the ampulla, seminal vesicle, and prostate. The urethra then runs from the bladder through the penis. Along the top of each testicle is the epididymis. This is a cordlike structure where the sperm mature and are stored.
The release process starts when the penis fills with blood and becomes erect. The bag of skin that holds and helps to protect the testicles. The testicles make sperm and, to do this, the temperature of the testicles needs to be cooler than the inside of the body. This is why the scrotum is located outside of the body. Testes testicles. The testes are 2 small organs that are found inside the scrotum.
The testes are responsible for making sperm and are also involved in producing a hormone called testosterone. Testosterone is an important hormone during male development and maturation for developing muscles, deepening the voice, and growing body hair.
